The Portland Trail Blazers are off to a sub-par start to the season currently holding a 7-6 record through the first 13 games of the season. In fact, they have dropped three out of the last five games. In light of that, star guard Damian Lillard took a shot at his own team’s play.
“We kind of suck right now,” All-Star point guard Damian Lillard told Joe Freeman of The Oregonian. “It’s that simple.”
“We’re just not very good right now. We’ve just got to keep fighting. It’s important for our team to stay together and I think that’s one of the biggest strengths of our team is we stay together. If we try to stay positive and we just keep working and keep fighting, I think at some point it’ll click. We’ll get it right and things will be fine. But I think everybody’s frustrated.”
Heading into the season, Portland was viewed as one of the better teams in the Western Conference that would contend for a playoff spot. They have a young and promising core in place led by their dynamic backcourt duo of Lillard and C.J. McCollum. However, their defense has been disappointing giving up 112.4 points per game which rank them 29th in the league.
If their struggles on that end of the court persist, it could become their downfall in reaching the playoffs. That said, it’s still early in the season with about 70 games left to play. It’s just something certainly to watch moving forward.
