This offseason, the Dallas Mavericks made the big splash move to sign Harrison Barnes to a max contract away from the Golden State Warriors. This has immediately put big expectations on his shoulders to become the next cornerstone player for the organization. In light of that, Dirk Nowitzki gave him a glowing compliment.
“He has the complete package,” Nowitzki told Sporting News. “I’ve worked out with him a couple of times after practices, and he’s got every shot in the book. And he’s looked like a franchise player here the last few weeks. He’s shown us moves that are very impressive, not only shooting the ball, but driving the ball, both ways. He’s got left(-hand) hooks and left runners. He’s shown strong post moves. He’s athletic. He’s a hard worker. He wants to win. So I think the sky is the limit for him.”
Nowitzki clearly thinks highly of his new teammate and believes he can take over the reigns once he eventually departs in a year or two. Barnes has been productive in a prominent offensive role averaging a team-leading 21.3 points. He has scored in double figures in every game this season, including three games with 30 or more points.
What has also helped is that Barnes has been open to taking over that huge responsibility with the team. Keep in mind, Nowitzki is the greatest player to play for the Mavericks and one of the greatest to ever play the game. That said, the fact that he is confident in Barnes should be a positive sign for the fan base to rest their head on.
