Gregg Popovich throughout his coaching career has never been one to mince his words through the media. He has always been quite straight forward with his response. According to SB Nation, when Popovich was asked about Kawhi Leonard being a two-way player he had a stern answer.
“He’s done it for us the entire time he’s been there,” Popovich said. “At the offensive end, I think our players get less minutes than other players at those positions if I’m not mistaken. I don’t think he’s ever going to be worn out. I’m not going to play him like Latrell Sprewell. The bottom line is that he’s getting paid to do both. So get your ass out there and do both, if you want to know the truth. If you don’t want to do both then we’ll pay you $4 million.”
This isn’t a shot at Leonard by any means as he has been their primary offensive contributor averaging a career-high 24.8 points per game. He has certainly stepped up on that end of the floor and shown further progression. He is already arguably the best defender in the league being the two-time reigning Defensive Player of the Year.
Leonard is a special talent that the Popovich know he has and has preached about on several occassions over the years. There’s no reason to believe he can’t become one of the league’s top-way players and possibly earn an MVP award in the future. All in all, Leonard has been everything Spurs have asked for and more.
