Although the Warriors handily dismantled the Nuggets on Thursday night, it was the second time in a week that a Warriors player saw the end to an impressive streak.
Last week the Warriors lost to the Lakers, who managed to hold Steph Curry to 0 threes for the first time in over 150 games. This time, Kevin Durant came out of the game with only 18 points, 2 shy of the 20 a game he’s put up for the last 71. Michael Jordan’s record breaking streak was 72, so Durant could have tied it last night.
Coach Kerr took Durant out of the game with 5 minutes left, despite knowing about the record.
“I knew about it,” Kerr told reporters. “I knew about the streak and I told him that when he came off the court, but I’m not gonna mess with the basketball gods. If you wanna leave a guy out there to get some kind of record, then you’re asking for an injury.”
“The game called for him to come out. He came out, he had no problem with it.”
Last year the Warriors caught flack for chasing records and now they’re getting laughed at for ending streaks. Either way, they don’t seem to mind.
