Phil Jackson is considered one of the greatest, if not the greatest, NBA coach of all time. Lebron James is already considered to be one of the greatest players of all time and he still has years of his career left. The two seemingly have no bad blood between them but a recent comment by Jackson irked James. Jackson was being interviewed by ESPN and was asked to discuss Lebron’s exit from Miami in 2014. This is what he had to say:
“It had to hurt when they lost LeBron. That was definitely a slap in the face. But there were a lot of little things that came out of that. When LeBron was playing with the Heat, they went to Cleveland, and he wanted to spend the night. They don’t do overnights. Teams just don’t. So now [coach Erik] Spoelstra has to text Riley and say, ‘What do I do in this situation?’ And Pat, who has iron-fist rules, answers, ‘You are on the plane. You are with this team.’ You can’t hold up the whole team because you and your mom and your posse want to spend an extra night in Cleveland.”
Now one would think that Lebron would take offense to the idea that he wanted special treatment, but that is not where his qualms came from. Lebron did not like the use of the term “posse” to describe him and his friends. James said they had no relationship before this incident and he had nothing but respect for Jackson. James described his displeasure in greater detail:
“It just sucks that now at this point having one of the biggest businesses you can have both on and off the floor, having a certified agent in Rich Paul, having a certified business partner in Maverick Carter, that’s done so many great business [deals], that the title for young African-Americans is the word ‘posse.'”
Lets see how Jackson responds to the public criticism and if he issues an apology.
