Luke Walton Is Putting Some Huge Offensive Expectations On D’Angelo Russell

We’re only 2 games into the pre-season, but Luke Walton already has some high praise for his players. One player Walton is particularly high on is second year point guard D’Angelo Russell.

After a bad performance in their first game against the Sacramento Kings, Russell bounced back against the Denver Nuggets with 21 points. Walton expects that Russell will be performing at that level every night once the season gets under way:

“I don’t think he goes out and hunts them,” Walton said of Russell. “As a point guard, he’s got a lot more responsibilities than just getting his average. But he has the ability and skill to average 20 points a game.”

With the loss of Kobe Bryant, scoring 20 a night isn’t impossible for the young point guard. There’s no clear number one shooter on this team, so it’s anyone’s for the taking. At least, that’s how Russell sees it:

“I don’t think he goes out and hunts them,” Walton said of Russell. “As a point guard, he’s got a lot more responsibilities than just getting his average. But he has the ability and skill to average 20 points a game.”

There’s a lot of expectation on the 20 year old player, and on the first time head coach. While it may be a rebuilding year for the Lakers, it’ll still be interesting to see how they live up to the hype.
