During this past offseason, Mike Conley Jr. was the recipient of the largest contract in NBA history at five years and $153 million. It has remained a talking point among critics of the Memphis Grizzlies point guard. According to the Sporting News, Conely has issued a response back toward these naysayers.
“It doesn’t bother me, at all,” he said. “It’s part of it. I’m in a blessed situation. When I hear the talk, when I look on my phone and see messages on Twitter about it, it really pushes me, to be honest. So I know it’s going to come. There’s gonna be a lot of talk about it all season, no question. But it’s already here. I almost look forward to playing on the road, for that very reason.”
Although Conley Jr. has yet to receive an NBA All-Star Game selection, he is one of the league top point guards. He has proven to be a strong defender at his position and capable scorer over the last several years. In fact, he has been one of the backbone pieces to the puzzle for the Grizzlies, who have made the playoffs in six consecutive years.
All this has done is provide Conley Jr. with more motivation to show that he was worth that gigantic contract. He is off to strong start averaging 19.7 points and 6.7 assists per game, including a pair of 24-point performances. As long as he remains healthy, Conley Jr. should demonstrate his worth for that massive contract.
