Heading into the season, there was a growing sense that this could be the last hurrah for the Los Angele Clippers’ current core group of players. This includes All-Star forward Blake Griffin, who has a player option for the 2017-18 season. According to ESPN.com’s Zach Lowe, the Oklahoma City Thunder have already been ruled out if decides to enter free agency next summer.
“There is no sign Blake Griffin wants to come home, per several sources.”
The Thunder were viewed as an obvious option for Griffin given his strong connection to the state having attended the University of Oklahoma and grown up in Oklahoma City. However, this doesn’t appear to be strong enough of a reason for him to seriously consider leaving the Clippers for his hometown team. His interests at this point in time lie with first focusing in on this season.
Even with that being the case, Griffin will likely still enter free agency in hopes of cashing in on a monster contract with the league salary cap continuing to rise. Much of his decision could hinge on how the Clippers finish out this year. They are off to a hot start holding a league-best 10-2 record.
