When the Panthers went 15-1 and made it to the Superbowl last season, they seemed poised to be a powerhouse for years. A great defense, a superstar quarterback and talented offensive players seemed like a recipe for success.
Unfortunately for Panthers fans, the wheels seem to have fallen off. The team is 1-3 going into week 5, facing a must win situation against the division rival Tampa Bay Bucs. And it looks like that game just got a lot tougher with the news regarding Cam Newton’s status. Via the Charlotte Observer:
The Carolina Panthers put out their longest injury report of the season Thursday, with plenty of other names under quarterback Cam Newton’s in the “did not participate” category.
Newton and left tackle Michael Oher are expected to miss Monday night’s game against Tampa Bay as they remain in the NFL’s concussion protocol.
While the Panthers haven’t officially ruled Cam out, he suffered a concussion last week and hasn’t had a chance to practice with the team under the new league concussion protocol. It seems pretty unlikely that the Panthers will start him when he hasn’t had a chance to practice with the team all week.
The one thing the Panthers have going for them is that the game is on Monday night, giving Cam an extra day to recover. Still, he seems unlikely to see any game action this week.
