During this past offseason, Russell Westbrook made the surprising decision to sign an extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder. It’s something that caught many off guard. This apparently still includes New York Knicks star forward Carmelo Anthony.
“Yeah I was, to be honest with you, yeah, for him to do it that soon. But that’s Russ,” Anthony told Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News. “Russ don’t give a damn about nothing. It’s all about what he want to do and when he want to do it, how he want to do it. I think he wants to show people he was loyal to OKC.”
Westbrook made that abundantly clearly in the press conference following the deal that he wanted to show his loyalty. If it was a jab at Kevin Durant or not, he just wanted to do it his way. Westbrook got ahead of the curve and took away all the chatter about free agency by deciding on his future now.
It has put him in the position to be the face of the franchise for the foreseeable future with this commitment. The fate of the Thunder’s future lies primarily in his hands, which is exactly what he wanted. His decision to stay could change the course of the franchise.
