In the last few weeks, there has been growing speculation involving a match between WWE legend Shawn Michaels and AJ Styles at next year’s Royal Rumble. Styles has recently addressed the rumors by stating he would be interested in that match. According to Wrestling Inc., it appears this is far from coming to fruition.
As noted, there have been unsubstantiated rumors of WWE trying to get Shawn Michaels to come out of retirement for a match against WWE World Champion AJ Styles at the 2017 Royal Rumble pay-per-view. Styles fueled the rumors by posting a fan-created graphic of he and Michaels yesterday. In regards to the rumors, F4Wonline.com reports that Michaels was firm that he would not come out of retirement the last time WWE asked him about doing a match. That was not too long ago but as we’ve seen, anything is possible in the world of pro wrestling.
Although Michaels had picked up a job as a trainer at the performance center in Orlando a few months ago, he has no interesting in returning to the ring. He had seen his illustrious career that came to an end six years ago and hasn’t had any significant push about coming back. With that in mind, it makes plenty of sense that this has remained the same.
It would be entertaining to see these two professional wrestling legends take part in a match, but the focus should now shift to the upcoming Brock Lesnar and Goldberg bout at Survivor Series. There is already a lot of buzz building toward it after Goldberg made his return after nearly 13 years this past Monday. Time will only tell if this match can meet the hype.
