Since Kevin Durant announced his decision to depart from the Oklahoma City Thunder, Russell Westbrook has not spoken about it once. He has been mum voicing that his focus is only on his team moving forward. According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, there is more to how things unfolded than Westbrook is letting on.
In the last week of June, with the free agency signing period looming, Durant meets Thunder teammates Russell Westbrook and Nick Collison and assistant coach Royal Ivey at BOA Steakhouse in West Hollywood. Over steaks, Westbrook, in an effort to lobby Durant to stay in Oklahoma City, asks Durant what he could do differently. The Thunder contingent leaves the restaurant that night with the impression that Durant will return.
It should come as no surprise that Westbrook wanted Durant to return. The two had experienced much success together and were just a mere win away from reaching their second NBA Finals. However, the former league MVP decided to take his talents elsewhere.
This may have affected Westbrook on a much deeper level than anticipated. It could be the sole reason why he’s shutting out any questions regarding his former teammates. All of this just provides further clarity on the entire situation and how things have unfolded in the manner that they have for both sides.
