The Los Angeles Clippers are entering a critical season with likely the last go around for this current group of players. Much of this is due to the fact that both Blake Griffin and Chris Paul can become free agents next summer. When asked by SiriusXM NBA Radio about his possible free agency, Griffin had an interesting response.
“Honestly, nothing I even really think about. Haven’t had a conversation with anybody. That includes friends, family, agents, coaches, teammates… It’s not a conversation I have. I got a lot of basketball left to play this year. I got a full season, postseason… So that’s on the back on my mind. I’ll deal with that one when the appropriate time comes, but right now isn’t the time.”
This isn’t the best answer that the Clippers want to hear from their star player. There were numerous reports in the offseason stating that Griffin was going to re-sign with the team in free agency. However, his response here doesn’t exactly indicate that was the case.
Ultimately, Griffin’s future with the team will hinge on how the Clippers perform this upcoming season. Los Angeles has a talented roster that can be a championship contender but they have repeatedly fallen short in the playoffs. If they suffer the same fate once again, Griffin could very be wearing another uniform for the 2017-18 season.
