The WWE is just over a week removed from Goldberg’s shocking win over Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series. Since then, many details have emerged. According to Wrestling Inc., Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter revealed that the announcers were told to commentate as a fight rather than a match.
Dave Meltzer noted in the latest issue of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the idea for last week’s Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar match at The Survivor Series was to present it as a fight. He noted that the announcers were told to call the match like a fight, unlike anything else on the show.
The WWE was hoping that this type of commentating could translate to wrestling fans being more accepting of a quick finish to the match. With the UFC being a prominent part of the sports world, it has become a normalcy to see their fights end quickly with one side showing pure dominance. It also helps build the ‘shock’ aspect for the audience watching the match.
This is something that the WWE took a huge chance on by making Goldberg, who has been nearly 13 years removed from his last match, look absolutely unstoppable. It has immediately helped him get over in the business and become the biggest star for at least the time being. That said, it will be interesting to see how things transpire at the Royal Rumble next year.
